This tour will take you on a two-hour drive into the western hills of Belize, passing through many local villages until you arrive in San Ignacio Town. The drive continues to the Mayan village of Succotz. There you will cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry on the way to Xunantunich, then about a mile drive up the hill to the great Mayan city of Xunantunich. You will be marvelled at these great structures that the Mayans left behind and wonders of these ancient people and their great intelligence. You get to climb the largest and tallest temple “El Castillo” and get a panoramic view of the entire city and even a view of Guatemala. Also, you get to learn a lot of historical facts about the Mayans that will take you back to 600AD and learn of the first Mayan settlers, including how the city got its name “Stone Woman”.
After exploring Xunantunich the tour then takes you on a 20-minute drive to San Ignacio Town and up a steep hill to Cahal Pech. This site was once the residence of an Elite Mayan family that ruled over the area. You get to see the courtyards that remain of the residence and the temple. Cahal Pech has been extensively excavated so you will get see much more than other sites, and get first-hand information on how the Elite Family lived. This is great fun and educational tour for history lovers.
