Cahal Pech which means “place of ticks” in the Mayan language is located in San Ignacio town on top of a steep hill. This is a very interesting site and it’s a must-see if you are in the San Ignacio area. This site was once inhabited by the Mayan Elites and much of it has been excavated. You will see the Royal dwellings of the elite Mayan family who ruled this area in the Classic Period. It’s believed that this site was first settled around 1200 BC. Cahal Pech consists of seven plazas and more than thirty structures, including a ball court, sweat house, alter, temple and residential buildings.
