One of the best Mayan Sites to visit in Belize. Lamanai is located on the banks of the new river lagoon in the Orange Walk District. The tour begins with a 50 minutes boat ride up the New River. It’s a very enjoyable and relaxing boat ride, with a chance to see crocodiles, wetland birds and Howler Monkeys.
In brief, Lamanai, meaning “submerge crocodile” in Mayan has three main temples. The first is the Jaguar Temple which has a carved shape of a Jaguar on it. The other is the High Temple, which raises some 108 feet and offers a great view of the entire area from the top. The third temple is the Mask Temple which has a 13-foot limestone mask of an ancient Mayan King.
Additionally, as you explore around Lamanai you will come across the remains of a church constructed by the Spaniards to convert the Mayans to Christianity. It was burnt down by the Mayans in a revolt.
